Simon Scharinger

Coiffeur Rob, work by Simon Scharinger

About the artist

Simon Scharinger gives shape to what hides in plain sight, navigating between revelation and denial. His work explores visual materials that make invisible systems visible. He notices forms that function more as frames than as organs, structures that resemble bones or skull-like contours without ever confirming themselves as such. Simon creates surfaces of vanished recognition, where clarity fades and the image remains in a state of constant flux between presence and absence.

Simon Scharinger (1996, Austria) lives in Groningen. He earned his bachelor's in Fine Arts at AKI ArtEZ University of the Arts and his master's in painting at the Frank Mohr Institute in Groningen.

Starting point of the work

I unexpectedly had to place my work in a completely new context, due to the sudden closure of Smosbar Demeter. At Coiffeur Rob, I was fortunately given the freedom to (re)place my works according to my own insight. A completely different environment gives a different effect.

Coiffeur Rob

Mechelsesteenweg 69, 2018 Antwerpen, Antwerpen
Tue–Fri 09:00–19:00 · Sat 09:00–17:00

Sometimes a new place arrives at exactly the right moment. When Smosbar Demeter unexpectedly had to close its doors, Rob of Coiffeur Rob spontaneously stepped in as a replacement location. Not so strange perhaps: his spacious barbershop has plenty of wall space, character and an owner who loves art.

For over thirty years Rob has been cutting hair for men of all ages, from children to adults, and is known in Antwerp for his craftsmanship and personal approach. No rushed conveyor-belt work here: appointments are by booking, with time for attention, a good conversation and a cut that really suits you.

A barbershop where art will soon hang on the wall as naturally as the scissors in Rob's hand.
