Dieuwke Jollema Gorter

About the artist
How do you look at a moment that has already passed? Don't we actually do that all the time without really pausing to notice? And what remains of it when we try to capture something that is, by nature, so fleeting? Dieuwke Jollema Gorter paints what she sees when she asks herself these questions: what she would otherwise probably not remember, what usually slips away unnoticed.
Starting point of the work
The first thing I notice about my work in relation to the optician is that they help people get everything into sharp focus, while in my paintings it's blurriness that carries quality. Back in my studio, my starting point is to look at the world with new eyes, so I decide to acquaint myself with oil paint, a new medium for me. I prefer to leave the questions this raises unanswered.

Optiek Sels
At Optiek Sels in Antwerp, you literally look through four generations of craftsmanship. In the city's oldest optician's shop, Stéphanie and Dorien welcome you warmly. They share their experience, curiosity and a sharp eye for what suits someone. The collection ranges from refined Belgian design to bold international frames. Here you don't just pick a pair of glasses. You search for the frame that suddenly feels right.
