About the artist
From his studio in Ghent, Sven Boel creates mechanical works, actions and sculptures. His work arises from spontaneous conversations, striking remarks and a continual wonder at human language and communication. From questions, misunderstandings and encounters, he gives shape to what plays out between people but often remains invisible.
Sven Boel (1985) lives in Ghent. He earned a master's in Fine Arts at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent.
Starting point of the work
Knives have long been present in my life, first as a baker and today in my studio. What fascinates me about De Messenwinkel is its attention to precision and craftsmanship. It's above all that process of sharpening knives, and the human ability to sharpen a text, that sparks my curiosity.

De Messenwinkel is one of those specialty shops where the word special truly applies. The shelves hold not only kitchen knives but everything that cuts: from razors and scissors to sharpening stones and peelers. You'll also find a collection of shaving soaps in beautifully packaged boxes with elegant logos from every corner of the world. Everything is carefully selected for quality, and the owner and his wife know every knife, every origin and every detail.
