Billie’s Bottle Shop, work by Amber Schaafsma

About the artist

In her work, Amber Schaafsma explores the twilight zone between romanticising and ironising, two potentially conflicting attitudes that meet in the concept of romantic irony. Romantic irony occurs when the illusion of a story is broken and the gap between reality and expectation is revealed. She likes to work with a nod to Romanticism and uses cinematic clichés found in everyday life.

Amber Schaafsma (1998) lives in Amsterdam. She graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, Fine Arts.

Starting point of the work

When celebrating, when mourning, and on other special occasions, the glass is raised in harmony, toasts are made, tastes are savoured, and the aftertaste can settle into a lasting memory. Reality and expectation, the symphony between the two, or its complete absence — a game of chance with several possible outcomes. Billie's Bottle Shop offers the glass over whose rim work focused on chance, hope and nostalgia may foam.

When celebrating, when mourning, the glass is raised in harmony, toasts are made, and the aftertaste can settle into a lasting memory.

Billie’s Bottle Shop

Aalmoezenierstraat 38, Antwerpen
Wed 16:00–20:00 · Thu–Fri 15:00–20:00 · Sat–Sun 14:00–20:00

Billie's Bottle Shop appears in a narrow alley, an unexpected place where beer enthusiasm is worn with visible passion. Since May 2019 you've been able to buy special beers here to take home or taste on the spot in the little city garden out back. Choosing isn't easy: the bottles beckon with colourful labels, and sometimes even with a neck wrapped in bright red or purple sealing wax.
